Work plan for the Schuylkill River basin, Pennsylvania: Assessment of river quality as related to the distribution and transport of trace metals and organic substances

The U.S. Geological Survey is making a river-quality assessment of the Schuylkill River basin in Pennsylvania from October 1978 to March 1981. It is part of a continuing program designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of river-quality studies for basin planning and water-resource management. Study objectives include determining (1) presence of selected trace metals and organic...

Early concentrations of Brown Pelicans along southern Oregon coast

The California Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis californicus), which nests in southern California and Mexico, wanders north along the coast after the breeding season, sometimes as far as southern British Columbia (A.O.U. 1957). Anderson and Anderson (1976) and Ainley (1972) report that Mexico-originating pelicans disperse north in late summer and fall, increasing California coastal...

Investigation of acidity and other water-quality characteristics of Upper Oyster Creek, Ocean County, New Jersey

Water-quality data collected in the upper Oyster Creek drainage basin, Ocean County, N.J., indicate that the stream has excellent water quality except for a persistently low pH. The mean concentrations of the major inorganic ions were all less than 6.0 milligrams per liter. Mean concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 0.15 mg/L and 0.01 mg/L, respectively. Dissolved...

Dopamine and norepinephrine depletion in ring doves fed DDE, dieldrin, and Aroclor 1254

The levels of dopamine and norepinephrine were measured in one-half of the brain of ring doves fed a control diet or a diet containing 2, 20, or 200 ppm DDE; 1, 4, or 16 ppm dieldrin; or 1, 10, or 100 ppm Aroclor 1254. Levels of DDE, dieldrin, or Aroclor 1254 were determined in the other half of each brain. The intermediate and high levels of each chemical caused depletions in both...
