Variation in survival and recovery rates of ring-necked ducks

Band recovery data were used to examine sex-specific, geographic, and temporal variations in survival and recovery rates of ring-necked ducks (Aythya collaris). Survival rates were higher (P < 0.05) for males than for females in the preseason-banded sample and in 2 of 3 postseason samples; recovery rates were higher (P < 0.05) for females in 1 postseason sample. Survival rates of postseason-banded

Fifty-ninth Christmas Bird Count. 176. Ocean City, Md

Some organophosphorus insecticides have been reported to interfere with reproduction and even cause the decline of small mammal populations. The effects of such anticholinesterases on plasma LH concentrations were examined in male mice (Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis) intubated with water (OW) or acephate (50 and 100 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 4 h. Brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity

Comparative toxicity of acephate in laboratory mice, white-footed mice and meadow voles

The LD50 (95% confidence limits) of the organophosphorus insecticide acephate was estimated to be 351, 380, and 321 mg/kg (295?416, 280?516, and 266?388 mg/kg) for CD-1 laboratory mice (Mus musculus), white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis), and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus), respectively. In a second study, these species were provided mash containing 0, 25, 100, and 400 pp

Effects of roads on small mammals

(1) The study was designed to determine the effects of roads on the diversity, spatial distribution, and density of small mammals. (2) Forty species of small mammal (5859 individuals) were snap-trapped in the study. Data resulted from 144 360 trap-nights of effort for an average of 4.06 captures per 100 trap-nights. (3) Small mammal community structure and density were both influenced by roads. Co

Species decline: A perspective on extinction, recovery, and propagation

This keynote address was presented at the Conference on the Conservation of Endangered Species in Zoological Parks and Aquariums on April 18, 1982 at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. It outlines 1) future trends in the world's environment, resources, and population; 2) factors affecting species decline; 3) reasons for preserving life forms; and 4) techniques, with emphasis on captive propagatio
