Kenna D Butler
Kenna serves as the Laboratory Science and Research Protections Coordinator in the Office of Science Quality and Integrity (OSQI), where she provides oversight for the USGS Quality Management System, coordinates the activities of the Laboratory Advisory Board, and oversees the development of research protection programs covering biosafety, biorisk management, and human research protections.
Kenna is a physical scientist in the Office of Science Quality and Integrity (OSQI). In her role as the Laboratory Science and Research Protections Coordinator, she leads a team of scientists who provide oversight for laboratory quality, develop tools and guidance to enhance the efficiency of laboratory operations, develop training and mechanisms for laboratory workforce development, and develop programs designed to enhance the integrity, quality, and accountability of laboratory science and research across the USGS. Her staff work with USGS scientists and managers to build programs aimed at protecting our scientists, our animal subjects, the environment, and the public in areas such as biosafety, biorisk management, and research involving humans.
Kenna joined the USGS in 2001, managing an environmental organic chemistry laboratory, where her research focused on dissolved organic carbon characterization, migration, and metal interaction in aquatic environments. After 14 years in that role, she entered center management before beginning her current role in 2018. As a center manager, Kenna oversaw the priorities and work of 80 scientists and was responsible for a complex scientific portfolio. Prior to joining the USGS, Kenna worked for the U.S. Army in Germany as a drinking water quality organic chemist working under an ISO accredited quality system. Kenna holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a Master's degree in Management with an emphasis on Public Administration.
