USGS Leadership Course 201

"I expect to pass through this world but once.  Any good, therefore, that  I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now.  Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again."

This week long course is an expansion/continuation of Leadership 101. Whereas, the 101 course provides fundamental information for leaders, the 201 course provides a deeper understanding of leadership, group interaction, and application of theories, as well as an opportunity to work on current USGS issues with members of the ELT.

Course Objectives

  • Continue the opportunity for USGS employees who show significant interest in the potential for leadership and management positions to meet and network.
  • Expose participants to a variety of learning experiences to enhance their growth and development.
  • Strengthen cross-discipline relationships, and provide exposure to high-level managers from the bureau who serve as instructors and champions of the action learning scenarios.

Course Content

  • Sessions detail the importance of storytelling as a leadership tool, creative problem solving, learning about yourself, science ethics, addressing personal and USGS challenges, and enhancing interaction.
  • Provides an opportunity to work on current USGS issues sponsored by ELT members and present the results to the class and champions.
  • Network and session with ELT member(s).

Process to Attend Leadership 201

  • Completion of the five day L101 training fulfills the nomination requirements for attending the five day L201 training (i.e., the second half of this leadership program).
  • Criteria – Graduates of L101 are automatically eligible to attend L201
  • Within 16-22 months after completing the L101 training, graduates are scheduled to return with their same group of 26 to attend in the second part of their leadership training, L201.
  • Note: If a L101 graduate cannot attend the scheduled dates for L201, then every effort will be made to include the participant with a future L201 class.
  • On the last day of L101 training, the class will know the dates for their L201 class. It is expected that the participants will mark the dates on their calendars and hold that week of training so that the full group can return to continue part two of their leadership training.
  • L101 graduates will receive a reminder of their upcoming training early in the fiscal year (November).
  • Salary, travel, and per diem for each attendee will be covered by the attendee’s cost center. There is no course tuition required from the participant.

  • Approximately a year and a half after taking L101, the same group of 24 attendees will be invited to attend the L201 class.
