Global physical controls on estuarine habitat distribution during sea levelchange: Consequences for genetic diversification through time
Determining the extrinsic (physical) factors controlling speciation and diversification of species through time is
of key interest in paleontology and evolutionary biology. The role of sea-level change in shaping species richness
patterns of marginal marine species has received much attention, but with variable conclusions. Recent work
combining genetic data and Geographical Information Systems (G

Northward migration of the Oregon forearc on the Gales Creek fault
The Gales Creek fault (GCF) is a 60-km-long, northwest-striking dextral fault system (west of Portland, Oregon) that accommodates northward motion and uplift of the Oregon Coast Range. New geologic mapping and geophysical models confirm inferred offsets from earlier geophysical surveys and document ∼12 km of right-lateral offset of a basement high in Eocene Siletz River Volcanics since ca. 35 Ma a

Bioaccumulation and toxicity of cadmium, copper, nickel, and zinc and their mixtures to aquatic insect communities
We describe 2 artificial stream experiments that exposed aquatic insect communities to zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and cadmium (year 2014) and to Zn, Cu, and nickel (year 2015). The testing strategy was to concurrently expose insect communities to single metals and mixtures. Single-metal tests were repeated to evaluate the reproducibility of the methods and year-to-year variability. Metals were strong

Zircon-hosted melt inclusion record of silicic magmatism in the Mesoproterozoic St. Francois Mountains terrane, Missouri: Origin of the Pea Ridge iron oxide-apatite rare earth element deposit and implications for regional crustal pathways of mineralizatio
Voluminous silicic magmatism was coeval with iron ore mineralization in the St.
Francois Mountains terrane in southeast Missouri, part of the broader Mesoproterozoic
Granite-Rhyolite province along the eastern margin of Laurentia. Some of the iron
deposits contain extraordinary endowments of critical elements, such as the Pea Ridge
iron oxide-apatite (IOA) deposit, which has an average grade of ~1

Attribute rules and dictionary symbology in ArcGIS Pro help streamline geologic map compilation in GeMS
Attribute rules and dictionary symbology are functionality available in ArcGIS Pro that can dramatically streamline the compilation of geologic maps in GeMS - the Geologic Map Schema that is the standard delivery schema mandated for projects funded by the Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. Testing of the functionality produced attribute rules and a symbol dictionary that support two compilation

Precious and base metal mineralization within the lower stratigraphy of the Stillwater Complex: New targets defined and old targets revisited
Group Ten Metals is exploring for base and precious metals within the Stillwater
Complex, a 2.7 Ga layered mafic/ultramafic intrusion, host to the world-class Sibanye
platinum group element (PGE) mines. Group Ten controls approximately 25 kilometers
of strike length of prospective mafic and ultramafic rocks in the western portion
of the Complex. The property includes multiple target types and indi

Focus areas for data acquisition for potential domestic resources of 11 critical minerals in the conterminous United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico—Aluminum, cobalt, graphite, lithium, niobium, platinum-group elements, rare earth elements, tantalum, tin,
In response to a need for information on potential domestic sources of critical minerals, the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) was established to identify and prioritize areas for acquisition of new geologic mapping, geophysical data, and elevation data to improve our knowledge of the geologic framework of the United States. Phase 1 of Earth MRI concentrated on those geologic terrane

Geothermal play fairway analysis of the Sou Hills, northern Nevada: A major quaternary accommodation zone in the Great Basin region
To facilitate discovery and development of blind geothermal systems in the Great Basin region, as well as assessment of known systems with surface hot springs, a play fairway approach was developed to evaluate and integrate multiple geologic and geophysical parameters for permeability and heat. Phase 1 of the project produced a geothermal potential map of 96,000 km2 of Nevada. This analysis yielde

Soil microbial communities and global change
Soils and soil microbial communities mediate the biogeochemical processes that underly ecosystem-level changes. This chapter examines why soils and soil microbial communities are important for understanding impacts and feedbacks to global change. It discusses the technological approaches and challenges that are at the frontiers of this research area. Global change impacts on microbial communities

Holocene sedimentary architecture and paleoclimate variability at Mono Lake, California
Mono Lake occupies an internally drained basin on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, and it is sensitive to climatic changes affecting precipitation in the mountains (largely delivered in the form of snowpack). Efforts to recover cores from the lake have been impeded by coarse tephra erupted from the Mono Craters, and by disruption of the lake floor due to the uplift of Paoha Island ~300 yr a

Seamless numerical simulation of a hazard cascade in which a landslide triggers a dam-breach flood and consequent debris flow
Numerical simulations of hazard cascades downstream from moraine-dammed lakes commonly must specify linkages between models of discrete processes such as wave overtopping, dam breaching, erosion, and downstream floods or debris flows. Such linkages can be rather arbitrary and can detract from the ability to accurately conserve mass and momentum during complex sequences of events. Here we describ

Post-12 Ma deformation of the lower Colorado River corridor, southwestern USA: Implications for diffuse transtension and the Bouse Formation
Structural evidence presented here documents that deformation was ongoing within the lower Colorado River corridor (southwestern USA) during and after the latest Miocene Epoch, postdating large-magnitude extension and metamorphic core complex formation. Geometric and kinematic data collected on faults in key geologic units constrain the timing of deformation in relation to the age of the Bouse For
