Whole-lake burdens and spatial distribution of mercury in surficial sediments in Wisconsin seepage lakes

We quantified total mercury in surficial sediments (uppermost 5 cm) of six small seepage lakes. Fifty cores were taken from each lake, based on a random sampling design stratified by water depth. Volumetric concentrations (mass per volume of wet sediment) more accurately portrayed the depth distribution of mercury in the lakes than did dry-weight concentrations, which underrepresented the signi

Reproductive characteristics of a population of the washboard mussel Megalonaias nervosa (Rafinesque 1820) in the upper Mississippi River

We examined monthly and age-specific gametogenic development of the washboard mussel, Megalonaias nervosa, from April 1986 to March 1987 in navigation Pool 10 of the upper Mississippi River. We found M. nervosa to be a late tachytictic breeder. Female marsupia contained eggs or glochidia primarily from August (17°C) through October (9°C). Males were mature from July through October. Most females r

Growth and mortality of larval sunfish in backwaters of the upper Mississippi River

The authors estimated the growth and mortality of larval sunfish Lepomis spp. in backwater habitats of the upper Mississippi River with an otolith-based method and a length-based method. Fish were sampled with plankton nets at one station in Navigation Pools 8 and 14 in 1989 and at two stations in Pool 8 in 1990. For both methods, growth was modeled with an exponential equation, and instantaneo

A sampling method for conducting relocation studies with freshwater mussels

Low recovery of transplanted mussels often prevents accurate estimates of survival. We developed a method that provided a high recovery of transplanted mussels and allowed for a reliable assessment of mortality.A 3 × 3 m polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe grid was secured to the sediment with iron reinforcing bars. The grid was divided into nine 1-m2 segments and each treatment segment, was stocked wit

Spawning activity of paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) in the lower Black River, Wisconsin

We present indirect evidence of successful paddlefish (Polyodon spathula reproduction in 1989 and 1991 in the lower Black River, Wisconsin, about 5 km upstream of the confluence with the upper Mississippi River. This is the first indication of successful reproduction by paddlefish at the northern end of its range in the central United States.Attempts to document paddlefish Polyodon spathula reprod

Comparative cardiovascular effects of four fishery anesthetics in spinally transected rainbow trout, oncorhynchus mykiss

1. We compared the effects of four anesthetics on heart rate, dorsal and ventral aortic blood pressure, and electrocardiograms of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).2. Exposure to the local anesthetics tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) and benzocaine hydrochloride (BZH) produced minimal cardiovascular alterations. Mean dorsal aortic pressure (DAP) decreased during exposure to MS-222, and mean DA

Least tern and piping plover nesting at sand pits in Nebraska

Endangered Least Terns (Sterna antillarum) and threatened Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) nest at commercial sand and gravel mining operations (sand pits) along the Platte River system in Nebraska. Sandbar habitat has been disappearing since the early 1900's along the Platte River system, but numbers of sand pits have increased. We hypothesized that birds would more fully utilize sand pits whe

Pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and metabolism of nitrofurantoin in the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)

The pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and metabolism of the drug nitrofurantoin were examined in the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) after intravascular or oral dosing. Mean plasma concentrations of nitrofurantoin after intravascular administration at 1 and 10 mg kg−1 of body weight were best fit to two- and three-compartment pharmacokinetic models, respectively. Nitrofurantoin was rapi

Trace elements and organochlorines in the shoalgrass community of the lower Laguna Madre Texas

Our objectives were to measure concentrations of seven trace elements and 14 organochlorine compounds in sediment and biota of the shoalgrass (Halodule wrightii) community of the lower Laguna Madre of south Texas and to determine whether chemicals associated with agriculture (e.g. mercury, arsenic, selenium, organochlorine pesticides) were highest near agricultural drainages. Arsenic, mercury, sel

Complex interactions of multiple aquatic consumers: an experimental mesocosm manipulation

In 7-m3 outdoor tanks filled with lake water, the presence/absence of omnivorous young-of-the- year Micropterus salmoides), zooplanktivorous Menidia beryllina , and herbivorous larval Hyla chrysocelis was experimentally manipulated. A cross-classified design was used to assess the interactive effects of these vertebrate consumers on the experimental food webs. The primary effects of the experim

Water resources data, Michigan, water year 1992

Water resources data for the 1992 water year for Michigan consists of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage and contents of lakes and reservoirs; and ground water levels. This report contains discharge records for 145 streamflow-gaging stations; stage only records for 1 river-gaging station and 8 lake-gaging stations; stage and contents for 4 lakes and reservoirs; water-
