Preliminary geomagnetic data, College Observatory, Fairbanks, Alaska: May 1983
The preliminary geomagnetic data included here is made available to scientific personnel and organizations, as part of a cooperative effort and on a data exchange basis because of the early need by some users. To avoid delay, all of the data is copied from original forms processed at the observatory; therefore it should be regarded as preliminary.

Landslide investigations, southern Cianjur Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia; a progress report
Two landslide-monitoring sites have been established for a minimum 2-year investigation near the villages of Pasirpari and Cibacang in southern Cianjur Regency, West Java, Indonesia. Surveyed-in lines will measure amounts of surface movement and tilt, borings that produced exploratory cores now serve as slip-surface detectors and open-pipe piezometers, and rain gages will record rainfall at both s

A new event detector designed for the Seismic Research Observatories
A new short-period event detector has been implemented on the Seismic Research Observatories. For each signal detected, a printed output gives estimates of the time of onset of the signal, direction of the first break, quality of onset, period and maximum amplitude of the signal, and an estimate of the variability of the background noise. On the SRO system, the new algorithm runs ~2.5x faster than

Summaries of technical reports, volume XVII
The research results described in the following summaries were submitted by
the investigators on October 20, 1983 and cover the 6-month period from
April 1, 1983 through September 30, 1983. These reports include both work
performed under contracts administered by the Geological Survey and work by
members of the Geological Survey. The report summaries are grouped into the
four major elements o

High paleointensities of the geomagnetic field from thermomagnetic studies on rift valley pillow basalts from the Mid- Atlantic Ridge
Nineteen pillow basalts dredged within the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at36.8°N were studied by the Thellier stepwise heating method in order to determine the paleointensity of the geomagnetic field when they erupted on to the sea floor. Previously reported fission track ages are 2,000 to 6,000 years for the youngest rocks (mainly olivine basalts) and 10,000 to 100,000 years for the othe
