Consumption and growth of hybrid grass carp fed four vegetation diets and trout chow in circular tanks

Grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and hybrid grass carp (grass carp ♀× bighead carp ♀Aristichthys nobilis), were fed duckweed (Lemna sp.), hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), chara (Chara sp.), filamentous algae (Odogonium sp., Spirogyra sp.), and trout chow. Grass carp consumed all plants in greater amounts than hybrids. Grass carp grew best when fed hydrilla and trout chow and showed positive g

Inbreeding in fish populations used for aquaculture

The theoretical causes of inbreeding depression are reviewed. Studies to measure depression at a series of inbreeding levels in rainbow trout populations using the method of inbred-outbred half-sib families are discussed. While the actual depression estimates varied widely between populations and inbreeding levels, significant levels of depression were found in many hatchery, field, and brood stoc

Requirement for dietary lysine and arginine by fry of rainbow trout

Triplicate lots of fry of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were fed a basal diet (47% protein) containing 67% corn gluten meal with and without a mixture of essential amino acids. The composition of the mixture was based on the differences between the amino acid contents of corn gluten meal and trout eggs. Fry fed the basal diet without added essential amino acids gained little weight, suffered hig

Some potentials and limits of the leucocrit test as a fish health assessment method

The sensitivity of the leucocrit as a stress tolerance and fish health assessment method was evaluated by subjecting juvenile coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, or steelhead trout, Salmo gairdneri, to standardized crowding, handling, temperature and disease challenges. The leucocrit was a sensitive indicator of the physiological stress resulting from crowding at population densities of 0·2–0·4 kg
