Referees and the publications crisis
Routine refereeing by peers of manuscripts submitted to scholarly journals is a logical and effective device that can obviate ‘crankiness, irrelevance and gross incompetence’ [Ziman, 1970a] on the one hand and minimize editorial arbitrariness on the other. As reviewed by Zuckerman and Merton [1971], the device has historical roots that extend back to the beginning of the first scholarly journals,

Territorial behavior, pesticides, and the population ecology of red-shouldered hawks in central Maryland, 1943-1971
A breeding population of red—shouldered hawks (Buteo lineatus) along the Patuxent River in central Maryland was studied during the interval 1943—71. Numbers of breeding pairs remained unchanged or increased on the PWRC (Patuxent Wildlife Research Center) and an adjoining area where habibat was not altered. A reduction in breeding pairs occurred on the third study area where large portions of the h

Interstitial water studies on small core samples from the Mediterranean Sea
Of ten Leg 13 sites studied by us, eight give definite evidence of the existence of halite-containing sediments beneath the seabed. This conclusion is based on the existence on continuous sodium and chloride enrichments in interstitial waters with depth. This is the only direct evidence of the existence of salt at these sites, for only evaporitic dolomite, gypsum, and/or anydrite were recovered in

Effect of mercuric chloride feeding on sexual maturity, egg production and fertility in Japanese quail
Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica) were fed 0, 8, 16 or 32 p.p.m. of mercury as mercuric chloride from 3 days of age through 20 weeks of age. The onset of egg production generally occurred earlier for hens fed HgCl2. Average age in days at first oviposition for the control, 8 p.p.m., 16 p.p.m. and 32 p.p.m. was 48.4, 50.9, 46.9 and 44.0 respectively. The average rate of egg productivity from

Sea birds wintering off Maryland shores, 1972-73
During the winter of 1972-73, studies were conducted to determine the status and distribution of pelagic species of birds occurring at sea as far as 38 miles east of Ocean City, Md. The wintering off-shore avifauna was found to be impressively rich in variety of species and numbers of individuals. Sightings included Fulmar and Skua, both first sight records for Maryland. Large alcids, especiall

Effect of salt on the response of birds to sucrose
The preference of male red-winged blackbirds for solutions of sucrose and sucrose with 0.03 M sodium chloride was tested, using a two-bottle choice test. Preliminary experiments demonstrated that the birds were indifferent to 0.03 M NaCl in water. Both control and experimental animals exhibited indifference to the solutions at the lowest concentration and aversion at the highest. The data sugge
