Data Releases

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Data on the acute and chronic toxicity of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate to freshwater organisms in a low hardness water representing Louisiana water conditions

We determined acute and chronic toxicity of sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) to up to 7 freshwater species of different taxa in a hardness water of 40 mg/L as CaCO3 and evaluated the effect of 4 hardness waters (15, 30, 60, and 120 mg/L as CaCO3) on acute toxicity of NaCl and Na2SO4 to 3 sensitive species tested in the acute exposures. This data release reports results from acute

Slide-hold-slide experiments on Westerly Granite at temperatures up to 250 °C

Laboratory slide-hold-slide tests were conducted in a conventional triaxial deformation configuration on 1-inch diameter cylindrical cores of Westerly granite bisected by a sawcut oriented at 30 degrees from vertical. Tests were conducted at a constant confining pressure of 30 MPa with a 10 MPa pore fluid pressure. The pore fluid was deionized water. Experiments were conducted at temperatures of 2

Socioeconomic and water needs indicators along the Cambodia and Vietnam border, within the Mekong River Delta

This data release documents socioeconomic and water demand indicators for the Mekong River delta region. The Mekong River provides many valuable benefits to the 60 million Southeast Asian residents living in its Basin. Maintaining adequate supplies of water in the Mekong River Basin is vital for food security. However, the Mekong River Basin is increasingly stressed by infrastructure development,

Phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended-sediment loads measured at the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative tributary monitoring network: Water years 2011–2020

Phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended-sediment loads, in 24 U.S. tributaries of the Great Lakes, were calculated using U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monitoring program for the period Oct 2010 through Sept 2020 (USGS water years 2011–2020). Total phosphorus, orthophosphate, particulate phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite, ammonium p

Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) version of Wentworth, C.M., Knudsen, K.L., and Witter, R.C., 2023, Quaternary deposits of the 9-county San Francisco Bay Region

This is a conversion of Wentworth and others (2023)[DAS1] to the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) for inclusion in the National Geologic Map Database. The original publication was in the Alacarte schema commonly used for geologic map databases prior to the release of the now mandatory GeMS. The GIS layers in this release have the same scientific content as the source data release. The source data releas

Current Velocity, Wave Height, and Directional Data in the Lower Laguna Madre near South Padre Island, Texas, July 2022 to January 2023

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the City of South Padre Island, Texas, deployed an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to collect current velocity, wave height, and directional data in the lower Laguna Madre adjacent to South Padre Island, Texas. From July 19, 2022, through January 9, 2023, these data were collected at a site near South Padre Island (USGS station number

Concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in tapwater collected throughout the United States, 2021-22

This dataset contains the concentration and quality assurance results for 34 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). 409 residential and commercial tapwater samples were collected once between May 2021 and May 2022, in the contiguous U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. Of these samples 252 were from publicly supplied tapwater locations, and 155 were sourced from private

Historical simulated snowpack and other hydrometeorology data at 90 m for the Crown of the Continent and vicinity, United States and Canada, water years 1981-2020

This data release contains historical SnowModel (Liston and Elder, 2006) output for the Crown of the Continent and surrounding areas in Montana and Idaho, USA; and Alberta and British Columbia, Canada from September 1, 1981 through August 31, 2020. Fifteen daily variables were simulated or derived for this release: (1) snow water equivalent (swed), (2) liquid precipitation (rpre), (3) solid precip

Database of historical anthracite coal-mining infrastructure at the northern end of the Lackawanna syncline, Wayne, Susquehanna, and Lackawanna counties, Pennsylvania

Abandoned railroads and infrastructure from the anthracite coal mining industry are significant features in abandoned mine lands and are an important part of history; however, these features are often lost and masked by the passage of time and the regrowth of forests. The application of modern light detection and ranging (lidar) topographic analysis, combined with ground-truthing "boots on the gro

Model subareas and moisture zones used in a sensitivity analysis of a water-budget model completed in 2022 for the islands of Oahu and Maui, Hawaii

A sensitivity analysis of groundwater-recharge estimates from a water-budget model was completed for the islands of Oahu and Maui, Hawaii (Johnson and others, 2023). Results of the sensitivity analysis were used to quantify the relative importance of selected model parameters to recharge estimates for three moisture zones (dry, mesic, and wet) on Oahu and Maui. These shapefiles contain the boundar

North Lake Mechant Landbridge Restoration (TE-44): 2021 land-water classification

The Louisiana State Legislature created the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed pursuant to these acts specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to arresting

Hurricane Sandy induced changes to piping plover nesting habitat on Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, New Jersey

The barrier islands and coastal beaches along the Atlantic Coast are dynamic systems continuously affected and shaped by tides and weather events (Davidson-Arnott 2010). Occasionally weather events are large enough to generate or expand beach overwash areas and may inundate all or part of the islands. Nor'easters, are known to play a significant role in shaping beach morphology along the Mid-Atlan
