Selection of wolf dens in relation to winter territories in northeastern Minnesota

Locations of wolf (Canus lupus) dens in the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota from 1969 through 1988 were analyzed in relation to winter territories. Dens situated within the central 60% of the territories were randomly located relative to territory centers. However, only 10.5% (2) of the dens were located within a 1-km-wide strip inside the territory boundaries, indicating possib

Nutritional value of dietary nucleic acids and purine bases to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Rainbow trout were fed diets with graded levels (0.6%, 1.6%, 2.5%, and 4.1%) of a yeast nucleic acid extract corresponding to dietary Saccharomyces cerevisiae levels of 7.5%, 20%, 30% and 50% or diets supplemented isonitrogenously (0.8% N) with free purines (adenine, guanine, xanthine, and hypoxanthine) in two 12-week studies. Fish fed increasing levels of yeast extract manifested significant (P <

Modelling the bathymetry of the Antarctic continental shelf

Continental shelves are typically covered by relatively shallow waters (<200 m) which deepen gradually from the coast to the shelf edge. The continental shelf around Antarctica is deeper than normal (400-700m) and is characterized in many areas by a nearshore trough (up to 1 km deep) that gradually shallows toward the shelf edge. We examine the cause for the unusual shelf bathymetry of Antarctica

The West Antarctic rift system, a propagating rift "captured" by a mantle plume

The West Antarctic rift system, marked by a 3-5-kilometer high shoulder from northern Victoria Land to the Ellsworth Mountains, extends through the Ross Embayment and the Byrd Subglacial Basin. Geophysical data suggest that the ice covered area beneath the rift zone is underlain by Cenozoic volcanic rocks (flood basalts?), and extended crust about 20 km thick. Exposed bimodal alkaline volcanic roc
