National water summary 1987: Hydrologic events and water supply and use

Water use in the United States, as measured by freshwater withdrawals in 1985, averaged 338,000 Mgal/d (million gallons per day), which is enough water to cover the 48 conterminous States to a depth of about 2.4 inches. Only 92,300 Mgal/d, or 27.3 percent of the water withdrawn, was consumptive use and thus lost to immediate further use; the remainder of the withdrawals (72.7 percent) was return f

Brain cholinesterase inhibition in songbirds from pecan groves sprayed with phosaline and disulfoton

Brain cholinesterase (ChE) activities of songbirds collected in pecan groves 6 to 7 hr after separate applications of the organophosphorus pesticides, phosalone and disulfoton, were compared to mean ChE activities of controls (normals) as a measure of insecticide exposure. In general, reduction of brain ChE activity ≥2 standard deviations below the control mean indicates exposure to an anticholine

Serological investigation of the fish pathogen Edwardsiella ictaluri, cause of enteric septicemia of catfish

The serological relationships among 32 isolates of Edwardsiella ictaluri obtained from fish were studied. The strains were extremely homogeneous in protein and lipopolysaccharide preparations as observed by sodium-dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Only minor variations were observed in the structural O-side chain subunits in three isolates; however, such variation did not preclud
