Data Releases

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Results of leaching experiments on 12 energy-related shales from the United States

Inorganic compositions of flowback and co-produced waters from hydrocarbon extraction have been studied directly and through laboratory experiments that seek to replicate subsurface water-rock interaction. Here a broad analysis is made of compositions from the U.S. Geological Survey Produced Waters Database (v2.3) and leachates (water, hydrochloric acid, artificial brine) for 12 energy-resource re

Station information, Seabed and Sample Imagery, and CTD Instrument Data Collected on Stellwagen Bank in September, 2016, U.S. Geological Survey Field Activity 2016-038-FA

This field activity is part of the effort to map geologic substrates of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region off Boston, Massachusetts. The overall goal is to develop high-resolution (1:25,000) interpretive maps, based on multibeam sonar data and seabed sampling, showing surficial geology and seabed sediment dynamics. This cruise was conducted in collaboration with the Stellwagen B

Sea-floor sediment samples, seabed imagery, and CTD instrument data collected on Stellwagen Bank in July and August, 2019, U.S. Geological Survey Field Activity 2019-008-FA (ver. 1.1, May 2023)

This field activity is part of the effort to map geologic substrates of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region off Boston, Massachusetts. Cleome lutea and Machaeranthera canescens seed transfer zones and distribution on the Colorado Plateau, US

These data were compiled to provide seed transfer and native plant materials development guidance to managers and practitioners across the Colorado Plateau and in adjacent regions. This data release contains empirical seed transfer zones derived from molecular genetic data for Cleome lutea (syn. Peritoma lutea) and Machaeranthera canescens (syn. Dieteria canescens). These species show distinct pop

High-resolution marine geophysical data collected by the USGS in the Belfast Bay, Maine pockmark field in 2006, 2008, and 2009.

The U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center in cooperation with the University of Maine mapped approximately 50 square kilometers of the seafloor within Belfast Bay, Maine. Three geophysical surveys conducted in 2006, 2008 and 2009 collected swath bathymetric (2006 and 2008) and chirp seismic reflection profile data (2006 and 2009). The project characterized the spatia

Bayesian modeling of NURE airborne radiometric data for the conterminous United States: predictions and grids

This data release includes estimates of potassium (K), equivalent uranium (eU), and equivalent thorium (eTh) for the conterminous United States derived from the U.S. Geological Survey's national airborne radiometric data compilation (Duval and others, 2005). Airborne gamma ray spectrometry (AGRS) measures the gamma-rays that are emitted from naturally occurring radioactive isotopes found in rocks

Water-quality and grain-size data collected at three sites near the Peason Ridge training area and two sites near the Main Post at the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk, 2015-2016

In 2015-2016, physicochemical properties and chemical characteristics of stream water, bed sediment, groundwater, and soil were determined in watersheds located outside of, but in proximity to, the Peason Ridge Training Area and Main Post at the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk boundaries to document background trace element concentrations. Water samples were analyzed for physicochemi

Hoary Marmot Abundance in North Cascades National Park 2007-2008 and 2016-2017

USGS and NPS biologists used distance sampling to estimate abundance of hoary marmots (Marmota caligata) in North Cascades National Park, Washington, USA during 2007-2008 and 2016-2017. Biologists resurveyed hoary marmots in 2016 and 2017 at 78 point-count stations across 19 sites surveyed by NPS in 2007-2008. Data include marmot detection distances and survey conditions used to estimate abundance

A GIS compilation of vector shorelines and coastal bluff edge positions, and associated rate-of-change data for Barter Island, Alaska

This dataset consists of rate-of-change statistics for the coastal bluffs and shorelines at Barter Island, Alaska, for the time period 1947 to 2020. Rate calculations were computed within a GIS using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 5.0, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for the orthogonal transec

Data on the impacts of garlic mustard from a weeding experiment in Pennsylvania 2006-2016

Data were collected on the abundance of plants in a 10-year weeding experiment of garlic mustard, located at Trillium Trails Park in Pennsylvania. Garlic mustard was weeded annually to suppress its abundance, and the impacts of garlic mustard were measured based on the response of the plant community to garlic mustard weeding. Because garlic mustard is known to suppress mycorrhizal fungi, the myco

Honnedaga Liming Project soil and vegetation data, 2012-2018, Adirondack region, New York, USA

This dataset contains field descriptions of soil profiles and chemical analysis results of soil samples collected in the limed (T16) and reference (T24) watersheds of the Honnedaga Liming Study conducted in the watershed of Honnedaga Lake, in the southwestern portion of the Adirondack State Park in New York State, USA. Field measurements of trees, saplings and seedlings in these watersheds are al

Quality-Control Data for Volatile Organic Compounds and Environmental Sulfur-Hexafluoride Data for Groundwater Samples from the Williston Basin, USA

In 2018, groundwater samples were collected from aquifers in the Williston Basin in parts of eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and northwestern South Dakota. This dataset includes quality-control data for volatile organic compounds that include data for source-solution blanks and field blanks. The dataset also includes data for sulfur hexafluoride in environmental samples of groundwater.
