Data Releases

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Borehole hydrogeologic-unit top-surface altitude, aquifer hydraulic property, and groundwater-sample chloride data for the Virginia Eastern Shore from 1906 through 2019

A hydrogeologic framework was developed by USGS during 2016-19 to describe the groundwater system on the Virginia Eastern Shore. This USGS data release contains text files of (1) interpreted borehole hydrogeologic-unit top-surface altitudes, (2) summary values of previously documented estimates of aquifer hydraulic properties, and (3) groundwater-sample chloride concentrations and well summary sta

Drainage basins of selected streamgages in West Virginia through 2020

Drainage basin areas for 376 USGS streamgages in West Virginia and adjacent states were delineated digitally. The USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset HUC12 sub-watershed lines were used as outer limits of basins, and heads-up digitizing was used to delineate boundaries from the stream gage to the HUC12 boundary. The USGS National Map was used, as background, to show both contour lines and digital elev

High-resolution maps of big sagebrush plant community biomass using multivariate matching algorithms

These GeoTIFF data were compiled to investigate how a new multivariate matching algorithm transfers simulated plant functional biomass of big sagebrush plant communities from 200 sites to a gridded product with 30-arcsec spatial resolution. Objectives of our study were to (1) describe how climate change will alter the biomass and composition of key plant functional types; (2) quantify the impacts

Chemical and biological data from a study on method development for a short term 7 day sodium chloride and mock effluent toxicity tests with unionid mussels

The data consists of the responses (survival, growth, and/or reproduction) of test organisms were determined in six concentrations of toxicants in 7-day toxicity tests or in four different feeding rates in 7-day feeding experiments. Specifically we evaluated the sensitivity of 2 mussel species (Villosa constricta and Lampsilis siliquoidea) and P. promelas and C. dubia using effluents in 7-d exposu

Field Data Collected 2018 to Document Human-induced Gorge Incision at The Kink (Fortymile River, Alaska)

This dataset comprises four tables containing channel survey cross section data, field observations including channel width and bank material, measured surface water velocity, and alluvial grain size data collected along the North Fork Fortymile River near a man-made meander cutoff called The Kink. The data release also contains eight field photos used to obtain grain size distribution; four photo

Marine Corps Base Hawaii Oahu Hawaiian Hoary Bat Acoustic Data 2019-2021

Acoustic sampling for presence of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus semotus, also known as Aeorestes semotus) was conducted at 17 stations across four Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) properties on O‘ahu Island, Hawai‘i. Bats were confirmed as present at all properties; MCBH K?ne?ohe Bay on M?kapu Peninsula, Marine Corps Training Area Bellows (MCTAB) in Waimanalo, Camp H.M. Smith in Halaw

Lake Ontario April Prey Fish Bottom Trawl Survey, 1997-2021

This data release includes Lake Ontario prey fish data including species captured, relative abundance, spatial distribution, size structure, and age data from the April or spring prey fish bottom trawl survey, 1997 and 2021. Data from 1997 - 2015 are from U.S. waters of Lake Ontario while data from 2016 - 2021 include both U.S. and Canadian waters of Lake Ontario. Details about the vessel and gear

Soil microbes surrounding native and non-native Phragmites australis in the Great Lakes and East Coast of the United States (2015-2017 survey)

To determine the differences in soil microbial community composition between native and non-native lineages of Phragmites, we sampled soils from eight sites in the Great Lakes basin where populations of native and non-native Phragmites co-occurred. In addition, we included samples of soils from 27 populations of Phragmites across the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coasts of the US. Samples were colle

Lidar-derived digital elevation models in Clarksburg, MD representing the years 2002, 2008, 2013, and 2018

This is a collection of 3 ft resolution digital elevation model derived from light detection and ranging (lidar). Lidar was collected in 2002, 2008, 2013, and 2018. Coverage includes a portion of Clarksburg, Maryland, focused around the Clarksburg Special Protection Area (CSPA). Overall extent varies between each dataset, but all digital elevation models are aligned together with consistent overla

Ephemeral channel heads and digital elevation models used to extract stream networks in Clarksburg, MD (ver. 2.0, October 2021)

This dataset describes the location of channel heads survyed in two headwater watersheds in Clarksburg, Montgomery County, Maryland, and the digital elevation models derived from light detection and ranging (lidar) covering the two watersheds. The digital elevation models were used to derive topographic attributes used to delineate drainage networks that were then assessed for accuracy using the f

Mercury source identification in the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers

This dataset details mercury concentrations and mercury stable isotope values collected as part of an environmental mercury assessment encompassing the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers as well as two U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites. The Tensaw River was also sampled as part of this study as a reference site, absent of mercury contamination. As a part of this survey, sediments, wate

Regional screening for managed aquifer recharge suitability in Jordan, Lebanon, and surrounding areas

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development, Arab Water Council, Hydrology.NL, National Center for Research and Development (Jordan), and American University of Beirut, completed a project for acceleration of aquifer storage and recovery in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The MENA region is globally the most water-scarce regi
