Climate

December 6, 2024

Cryospheric Sciences at the U.S. Geological Survey

The cryosphere includes all frozen water on Earth, such as snow, glaciers, and permafrost, and acts as both a climate indicator and regulator. It stores freshwater and reflects sunlight, influencing the Earth's energy balance, while also containing carbon and nutrients that affect climate. Covering areas from subtropical Himalayas to polar regions, the cryosphere interacts with various Earth systems, reflecting the overall state of the climate.
